Cheapest Car Insurance In Michigan: Top 10 Revealed

Cars parked in a row insured with the cheapest car insurance in michigan

Michigan is truly unique. Imagine over 11,000 lakes. One thing that it’s unique for that is not a wonderful thing: Michigan has a unique blend of no-fault coverage and unlimited benefits. This means that the state premiums have been the highest in the nation for at least 5 years.

If you are asking yourself what’s the cheapest car insurance, read on; we reviewed and revealed the 2019 top 10 cheapest car insurance in Michigan.

Why So High?

There are what we call small (but still very important) factors that affect the premium you are charged for auto insurance. The frequency and dollar amount of claims in your area, the type of car you drive, the density of traffic, theft, and vandalism in your neighborhood are all variables that get poured into the pot and stirred around until your individualized premium is determined.

Unlimited Lifetime Coverage for Medical Expenses

Michigan is the only state to require unlimited lifetime coverage for medical expenses that arise from motor vehicle accidents. Healthcare providers—hospitals, physicians and laboratories for example— can bill car insurers much more for the care they deliver than health insurers pay.

On top of that idea is that every car is charged a $192 yearly fee to reimburse car insurers for the expenses surpassing $555,000 for catastrophically injured people.

No-Fault Insurance State

Michigan is a no-fault insurance state. From the most expensive to the cheapest car insurance in Michigan, each individual’s policy reimburses the holder for any and all damages regardless of who was at fault for the accident. As a result, the state of Michigan requires drivers to have certain minimum coverage amounts. Benefits include payments for medical services, prescription drugs, home care services, transportation services, and lost wages.

The no-fault insurance policy requires 3 parts. The personal injury protection (PIP) will pay all reasonably necessary medical expenses with no maximum limit. The payment of lost wages, however, will only be up to 85% of your income and it will only be paid out for 3 years.

The 2nd part of the no-fault insurance policy is property protection (PPI). This part will pay up to $1 million for damage that your car does in Michigan to someone else’s property such as buildings or fences. It also pays for the damage you may do to someone’s parked vehicle.

The 3rd requirement is residual liability/ insurance-bodily injury and property damage. This protects injured persons from being sued as a result of a motor vehicle accident except in certain situations:

  • Death, serious injury, permanent disfigurement
  • A non-resident occupant of a motor vehicle not registered in Michigan
  • Involvement in a motor vehicle accident in another state
  • For up to $1000 if you are 50% or more at fault in an accident, causing damages to a car that is not covered.

While having unlimited lifetime coverage for medical expenses and no-fault insurance are two good things to have when you need them, it makes the search for the cheapest car insurance in Michigan a daunting task.

What Will Happen If I Don’t Have Car Insurance?

It’s a good thing, that you are here now searching for the cheapest car insurance in Michigan. If you have a car accident in Michigan and you don’t have any insurance, you will be assessed triple penalties. Your license could be suspended. Your license plate will not be renewed, transferred or replaced and in fact, can be canceled.

You will be held personally responsible for the injured parties’ pain-and-suffering, READ: LAWSUIT. You will be held responsible for all property damage. Think about this as well; Michigan has significant winter weather and chances are you are going to be driving in it. It’s best to read on to find the cheapest car insurance in Michigan.

Mind the Gap

If you don’t own your car outright in an accident, gap insurance will pay the difference between the cash value of your car and what you owe on it. So if you’re financing your car and it’s less than one-year-old and you gave less than a 20% deposit, then you are going to need this added little pain in the wallet.

If you’re leasing a car and they don’t require gap insurance, it would be best to get some anyhow. Mind the gap or be prepared for a lot of headaches up ahead, should you have an accident.

We live in Michigan, and we also feel the lightness of our wallets after every premium payment and we feel the heaviness of the boot on our throat because Michigan has the highest auto insurance rates in the country, and unless the laws being debated now change, they are going to continue to go higher.

Since it is most likely that our insurance rates are going to never go down, our search for the cheapest car insurance in Michigan entailed Internet searches using impartial parameters such as financial strength—the ability to pay financial obligations—and customer claim satisfaction.

Determining the cheapest car insurance in Michigan is a difficult endeavor; not only are there so many variables, but each policy is individualized according to each person’s needs.

As well, although it is a good marketing practice to require personal information online from those who are looking for quotes, it would perhaps be a better marketing technique if each company website offered averages upfront to pique the interest and curiosity, driving the potential customer to contact an agent. Nevertheless, we were able to make a decent review.

The Verdict

First off, we excluded USAA which is for military personnel and Meemic, which only covers teachers and other education-types. The cheapest car insurance in Michigan is offered by the talking gecko at Geico. Geico stays pretty evenhanded throughout our assessment.

The cheapest car insurance in Michigan will stay cheapest if you can pull up and maintain a good credit score; Geicko couldn’t beat Progressive, Nationwide or Auto-Owners on giving credit for less credit.

Forgive and Forget

While we understand that having a speeding ticket or a DUI is an avoidable offense and is a reflection in a sense on personal character, issuing a forever penalty like an unreasonably high premium rate is unmerciful and does not show a willingness to have faith in a so-called loyal customer.

While Geico wasn’t number one for average premium with a DUI or motor vehicle accident, it still keeps a pretty even keel until the DUI charge. So if you don’t drink and drive, Geico is our choice for cheapest car insurance in Michigan.

Perhaps the biggest frustration in our search for the cheapest car insurance in Michigan is the fact that for marketing purposes perhaps, insurance company websites demand that you fill out mandatory information screens before they will give you a quote. We believe that it would make potential customers more curious and willing to fill out screens and call agents if the information such as we used in our review were more readily available.

No Fault of Your Own

Through no fault of your own, you happen to live in an area that has the highest automobile insurance rates. Unlimited lifetime coverage for medical expenses that happen during motor vehicle accidents is fertile soil for fraud, excessive billing and mismanagement.

Stay tuned, though, Michigan; there seems to be heated and ongoing battles at the state level to change the laws. No-Fault coverage requirements mean that everyone gets to share in the wealth of the burden that few cause. That, said, these things are nice to have when you need them.

If you enjoy taking chances, or for what possible other reason you may have, you might try to go without any automobile insurance, but if you get caught, there’s a good chance that you’ll be spending more than one year’s worth of premiums trying to get yourself and your automobile out of trouble.

The Cheapest Car Insurance in Michigan

We have found and reviewed aspects of the 10 cheapest car insurance in Michigan and we feel that Geico is the winner, but the fact is that you may find one of the other candidates may serve to meet your needs better than Geico. As we mentioned before, some information is hard to come by, so there may very well be a better insurance provider out there to meet your needs.

Our best advice to you is to pick a few of the ones we reviewed and dive deeper into the information you can glean on your own. When you have time to fill out the mandatory information screens and call an agent, you will discover that all of your efforts will be rewarded in terms of finding the best insurance for you that is still the cheapest car insurance in Michigan.
